NICE Presents: Join the Maasai — Students experienced the living history of the Maasai people through Chief Joseph Ole Tipanko and his tribal delegation from Kenya. Their presentation shared Maasai traditions, music, attire, and oral storytelling practices, offering a firsthand look at one of East Africa’s most iconic cultures.
-
Abdou Mboup: West African Drumming & History — Born in Kebemer, Senegal to a family of griots (oral historians), Abdou Mboup introduced students to the roots of Senegalese musical tradition. A pioneer of the modern Mbalax style, he demonstrated traditional drum techniques, discussed the evolution of African popular music, and shared stories from his career performing internationally—including with the renowned Dakar-based group Xalam under the patronage of South African musician Hugh Masekela.
Program Design and Themes
Each Black History Month program can be tailored to highlight specific cultures, regions, musical styles, or historical themes. Programs can focus on:
-
African and Caribbean musical traditions — exploring the origins, instruments, rhythms, and vocal styles that shaped today’s music genres.
-
Geography and cultural migration — understanding how African traditions traveled throughout the diaspora and influenced cultures in the Caribbean, the United States, and Latin America.
-
Dance and movement — featuring traditional and contemporary styles that reflect community history, storytelling, and resilience.
-
Artist residencies and workshops — hands-on drumming, dance, or storytelling sessions that deepen student engagement and cultural appreciation.
Our presentations can stand alone or be integrated into classroom units on history, social studies, music, and world cultures.
How to Begin
