The Jamaica Heritage Trust of Norwalk

On October 17, 2022, Jamaica National Heroes’ Day, the Jamaica Heritage Trust of Norwalk, Connecticut, dedicated a bronze plaque to the Jamaican diaspora. The plaque honors the contributions of the Jamaican immigrant community not only of Norwalk and the State of Connecticut, but the world over. Six Jamaican community leaders in Norwalk, CT. have been honored with the installation of the plaque: Janet Evelyn, Founder and Executive Director of the Norwalk International Cultural Exchange (NICE); Valerie Watson, Vice President, Patriot Bank; Novelette Peterkin, CEO, Carver Foundation of Norwalk; George Daley, Norwalk Police Department; Ingrid Aarons-Porter, LMSW; and Diane Jellerette, Executive Director, Norwalk Historical Society.

The Jamaica Heritage Trust of Norwalk is grateful to the supporters from around the country and around the world who were instrumental in raising the funds to make for this historic and momentous occasion. Members of the Jamaica Heritage Trust were joined by numerous members from the community, Local and State dignitaries to mark the occasion. Norwalk’s Heritage Wall

Norwalk’s Heritage Wall is located at the conspicuous intersection of the Interstate I-95 exit ramp and West Avenue, across the street from Mathews Park. The first plaque honored Hungarians in 1983; today there are 17 plaques recognizing Hungary, Italy, Native Americans, Poland, Greece, Scotland, Puerto Rico, Ireland, Costa Rica, African Americans, French-Canadians, Haiti, Germany, England, Portugal, China, and Columbia. The Norwalk Common Council approves each plaque following a review process.
