Bluegrass music developed in the 1940s as a distinct genre of American folk music, drawing influences from blues, Celtic, jazz, country, and pop traditions. A typical bluegrass band includes 4–7 players performing on instruments such as the banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, bass, and sometimes dobro. Students explore the history of the genre, participate in singing harmonies, and learn the basics of bluegrass jamming in this interactive musical deep dive.
Program Design and Themes
Each North American music program can be tailored to highlight specific genres, regional traditions, or performance styles. Programs can focus on:

-
Jazz, Soul & Blues — Learn about the roots of African American music and its influence on contemporary styles, including improvisation and ensemble techniques.
